Get to know us - Fundación Contra El Hambre

In “Food for the Hungry” or “Fundación contra el Hambre” (our name in Spanish) we have a very clear vision: “To end all types of human poverty”. We know that people are hungry, but emptiness goes far beyond the table. For that reason, we respond not only to physical hunger, but also to hunger for justice, peace, equity, equal opportunities, and more.

We are not strangers who offer a new way of life to the communities where we intervene. We are friends that respect the culture and customs of the people we serve in order to preserve their humanity and dignity.

We believe that when communities are trained and equipped to care for their most vulnerable members, the whole community is strengthened, and poverty can be overcome.

1971

Food for the Hungry began its labor in 1971 in the United States with Dr. Larry Ward, who was touched by the sadness and sorrow to know that thousands of children were dying every day because of hunger and wars in Asia and Africa, felt the call the start this mission called Food for the Hungry.

1982

We started to serve the country in order to give response to the serious problems caused by the floods of El Niño and by the extreme poverty due to terrorism, migration, corruption, and the government’s inefficiency.

1983-2006

We started working in three regions of the country: Lima, La Libertad and Pucallpa. In such regions, we conducted health and income-generating projects, work with community leaders, children and families, garden centers and family gardens, latrines, among others.

2007

We gave humanitarian aid to those families affected by the earthquake. We opened a venue in Ica and conducted income-generating projects.

2012

We implemented the programmatic Child-Focused Community Transformation model (CFCT) conducted by FH Peru, thinking about the way to combat the different causes of poverty. We are currently conducting the model in the regions of Lima and Huancavelica.

2021

Actions before Covid-19. We give support in mental health through a free hot-line called “I hear you, Peru”. We promote healthy eating habits and the prevention of violence together with volunteer mothers in the communities. Besides, we contribute with foods for more than 90 community kitchens.
