Your actions keep lives safe

Peru is involved in a health crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Thousands of Peruvians have been affected by the spread of the virus and we have experienced the collapse of the national health system. Unfortunately, only in the year 2020 there were more than one million people infected and more than 37 thousand deaths.

So we ask ourselves, could we have done something to change this reality?

The answer is yes, by preventing. In Food for the Hungry in Peru, together with our partners and participants of the health project, we have been building a prevention culture that can mitigate infections and reduce the effects of Covid-19 in the regions of Lima and Huancavelica, where we intervene. In the month of October 2020 we launched a campaign called “Your actions keep lives safe” which gathers our efforts to reduce those reported cases of coronavirus in the 138 communities we work in.

“Your actions keep lives safe” is a campaign that we have been working on together with volunteer mothers of the communities and health facilities. By this articulation up to the moment, we have reached over 2000 people and, thanks to the strategies planned, they have raised people’s awareness and have promoted the change of behavior before this health crisis.

As part of the campaign we have conducted trainings on how to improve health practices in families so as to prevent Covid-19. We have shared information that allowed everybody to learn more about the virus and to erase those myths about this illness. At the same time, we have strengthened our hand-washing habits and the right use of biosafety equipment.

The preventive culture we promote is holistic because we try to inspire a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of infection and adverse effects produced by Coronavirus. Therefore, we have focused on good healthy-eating habits and the importance of hygiene at the moment of handling food. We have also given clear messages about anemia, malnutrition, breastfeeding, and the importance of vaccinations in the early childhood, to those pregnant women with children under 2 years. The point was to strengthen children’s health.

Apart from that, our strategies have contemplated the delivery of more than 400 hygiene and cleaning kits for the members of the communities where we intervene, including elements that help those communities that do not have access to water. In that way, we try to encourage them to follow the suggested hygiene practices, thus reducing the contagion rate by Coronavirus.

And last but not least, we work in alliance with 14 local health facilities in Lima and 9 local health facilities in Huancavelica, which are aimed at strengthening the culture of prevention against Covid-19, through communication actions that work together as a whole. At the same time, as a way of support before the Covid-19 positive cases, we were able to give them more than 2000 treatment kits which contained medicines such as paracetamol, azithromycin, alcohol and face masks.

Our preventive work before Coronavirus keeps a frequent monitoring labor over the members of the communities so as to know their point of view and measure the impact of our strategies.

We reaffirm once again our commitment to develop a culture of prevention that will make it possible to reduce, in the members of the communities we intervene, possible infections or adverse effects due to Coronavirus.
